You will set off from Kampala (or Entebbe) at 6:30 am and head to the western part of Uganda to Lake Mburo National Park. The drive takes 3-4 hours with a stopover at the Equator for an opportunity to stand in both the northern and southern hemispheres at the same time. You will continue through the savannah grasslands dotted with settlements, plantations and several herds of local long horned Ankole cattle endemic to this part of the country.
Once you get into Lake Mburo National Park you will go for a game drive in search of wildlife like Zebra, hippos, crocodiles, eland, antelope, impala and a variety of birds. Post lunch you will go for a 2 hour boat ride on Lake Mburo which is endowed with a variety of water animals such as hippos and crocodiles and several bird species.
You will have breakfast at 6:30 AM before embarking on a morning game drive at Lake Mburo. After enjoying lunch along the way, you will continue your journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the southwest. The drive will take approximately 6 to 7 hours.
You will have an early morning breakfast at 6:30 a.m. After that, with your packed lunch, you will head to the park headquarters to join other trackers for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules at 7:30 a.m. The trek through the thick vegetation and undergrowth, guided by experienced trackers, may take anywhere from 1 to 8 hours as you search for the gorillas. The forested landscape is densely packed but features numerous animal trails that allow tourists access.
Once you locate the gorillas, you will spend some time observing them before transferring to Lake Bunyonyi.
The drive to the lake will take you through one of the most beautiful regions of the country, often referred to as “the Switzerland of Africa” because of its unique, cool climate despite being located near the Equator. Lake Bunyonyi is renowned as one of the most stunning locations in western Uganda. It is the second-deepest lake in Africa, reaching depths of 900 meters, and is one of the few places in the country where swimming is considered safe, as it is free of bilharzia.
Please note that depending on your arrival time at Lake Bunyonyi, you can pay an extra fee for activities such as a community walk, canoe ride, boat ride, bicycle ride, bird watching, or cray fishing. You can arrange and pay for these activities directly at your accommodation, either to do on that same day or the following day before departing back to Kampala or Entebbe.
