The Fascinating Island of Tortoises and History
Changuu Island, often referred to by a variety of intriguing names, is a gem that shouldn’t be overlooked. You might hear it called Turtle Island, Prison Island, Quarantine Island, or Kibandiko, but remember, when you embark on your adventure, you’re not exploring multiple islands, but rather a captivating stretch of land that is less than one kilometer long.
The island has earned the nickname Turtle Island or Tortoise Island for an enchanting reason: it is home to the majestic Aldabra Giant Tortoises, which can grow to impressive lengths of one meter (3.2 feet) or more. When these magnificent creatures stretch their necks from beneath their shells and lift them high, they can even reach the waist of an adult human! This remarkable sight draws tourists from far and wide, especially children, making it one of the island’s most cherished highlights.
Changuu Island also carries the name Prison Island due to the ruins of a prison constructed in the late 19th century. Interestingly, this complex was never used as a prison; instead, it functioned as a sanitation station for sailors and travelers suspected of carrying dangerous infectious diseases, hence its alternate name, Quarantine Island.
While the island has an older name Kibandiko we’ll focus on the captivating historical elements that resonate with today’s visitors. Rather than presenting them in chronological order, we’ll guide you through the island as tourists typically explore it, starting with the enchanting tortoises that make Changuu truly unforgettable. Get ready to experience a blend of natural wonder and rich history that will leave a lasting impression!
